3rd Alarm North Smithfield, RI 8 Mara Lane December 25, 2008 : NORTH SMITHFIELD, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - Early Christmas morning the North Smithfield, RI Fire Department received a residential fire alarm for the address of 8 Mara Lane. Engine 2 and Ladder 2 along with out of town companies responded while Santa Claus finished up his deliveries. Engine 2 arrived to find heavy smoke and fire conditions in an occupied 3000 square foot 2 story dwelling. Several occupants were forced to jump from the upper floors to escape this fast moving fire and were transported by ALS Rescues to RI Trauma Center. The order to fight this fire on a defensive attack was called due to the deteriorating conditions and lack of water. The OIC ordered quick 2nd and 3rd alarms due to manpower and the lack of a hydrant system in this second of town. The several hand lines were stretched had to be used sparingly until a water supply could be established by the tanker task force. The bulk of the fire was knocked down in an hour’s time leaving pockets of hidden fire. Mutual aid responded into the scene and also to fill in the empty firehouses.

2nd Alarm Bellingham, MA 44 Chestnut Street December 17, 2008 : Bellingham, MA (NORFOLK COUNTY) - The Bellingham, MA Fire Chief arrived on scene to find heavy fire venting from side A of a duplex at 44 Chestnut Street around 2320hrs on December 17, 2008. The fire was pushing through the center petition over the 2 front entrances of the dwelling. The fire did extend into the attic area causing extensive damage. Engine 1's crew stretched in a CAFS foam line into the left side of the duplex quickly knocking the fire down. BFD-1 (Chief) requested a second alarm due to the heavy smoke venting from the dwelling bringing in Woonsocket, Franklin, and Milford's Air Supply. Bellingham Ladder 1 threw their stick to side 1 to open up the exterior wall to find any hidden fire. Firefighters opened up the ceilings on the upper level exposing the heavy fire damage in the attic area. The aggressive interior attack kept this fire from tearing through the rest of the structure. Neighbors reported that dogs were possibly inside the structure at the time of the fire, but searches seemed to negative for human and canine occupants as of this writing. No injuries were reported and the scene is under investigation for cause and origin.

ACW Uxbridge, MA 39 Quaker Hwy December 15, 2008 : Uxbridge, MA (Worcester County) Firefighters responded to 39 Quaker Highway around 1530hrs on December 15, 2008 for a reported basement fire in an occupied raised ranch style dwelling. Engine 1 arrived to find smoke showing from the lower level of this 24x60 wood framed dwelling. All occupants were reported outside on arrival as companies began to stretch the initial hand lines. First in units found heavy fire conditions in an utility room on the lower level. The fire was quickly knocked down as the the next due units arrived on scene to establish a single 5" water supply line. A back up line was stretched in as a precaution during the salvage and overhaul phase. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Tractor Trailer tip-over Mendon & Capron Streets Uxbridge, MA December 09, 2008. : Uxbridge, MA (WORCESTER COUNTY) - A tractor trailer driver escaped this tip-over with minor injuries on Mendon Street (Rte-16) at Capron Street December 9, 2008 around 12:30 in the afternoon. The driver was traveling westbound on Rte-16 and failed to navigate the sharp corner causing the rig to tip on it's side. The driver was self extricated as emergency services arrived. Uxbridge Rescue evaluated the driver for injuries and suggested that he be seen at a local hospital for precautionary measures. Firefighters cut battery power to the cab and also checked for any fluids that might have leaked out of the rig. The trailer was reportedly carrying a full load of glass bottles. Uxbridge public safety units stayed on scene while the company off loaded the product from the trailer prior to up righting. The Massachusetts State Police Truck Team responded to the scene to investigate the vehicle and to reconstruct the scene for cause of the accident.

Car Fire Burrillville, RI 560blk of Buxton Street December 5, 2008 : Burrillville, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - Uxbridge, MA Fire Dispatch received a calls for a vehicle on Buxton Street around 1330hrs on December 5, 2008. Engine 1 and Car 1 reported that they were in the area with nothing showing. Companies then investigated the other two Buxton Streets in the area, one in North Smithfield, RI and the second in Burrillville, RI. The three Buxton Streets area all in with in a mile or two of each other. Engine companies from North Smithfield, RI and Burrillville, RI were dispatched to investigate their streets as Uxbridge units continued search also. Uxbridge, MA Car 1 arrived on Burrillville's Buxton Street finding a single vehicle that fully involved that was extending to surrounding brush. Uxbridge Engine 1 arrived and made the stretch on the fire. North Smithfield Engine 1 arrived second due and quickly attacked the brush fire that was taking off into the wooded area off of the roadway. No injuries were reported by the occupant of the vehicle.

Working Fire Cumberland, RI 1150 Mendon Rd December 3, 2008 : CUMBERLAND, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - Cumberland FAO dispatched a first alarm assignment to 1150 Mendon Road for reported flames coming from a structure. Cumberland Engine 22 arrived finding heavy smoke and fire from a 1 story wdfm beauty salon. Companies attempted an aggressive interior attack but had to withdraw due to a heavy fire load of aerosol hair products stored inside. Heavy fire broke through the roof once Cumberland Truck 5 completed the vent work. Truck 5 set up their aerial and waited for command to order the defensive operations to start. Several big lines, a deck gun, and a ladder pipe had the bulk of the heavy fire knocked down in roughly an hour. 

While firefighters were battling this fire, a second fire was reported about a 1/2 mile away on Mendon Road at a restaurant. Mutual aid companies along with recalled Cumberland firefighters knocked down a small kitchen fire. Both fire are deemed suspicious and are being investigated by Cumberland Police and the Rhode Island State Fire Marshals Office.

ACW Woonsocket, RI 293 Social Street Burger King November 22, 2008 : WOONSOCKET, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - Woonsocket Fire Alarm stilled out a first alarm to the Burger King Restaurant at 293 Social Street for a reported fire in the building on November 22, 2008 around 1700hrs. Engine 2 arrived to find this 1 story restaurant heavily charged with smoke. Ladder 1's crew went to the roof via the stick to check for extension along with the members of Engine 1. They opened the roof finding heavy smoke only. Engine's 2 and 3 opened the siding on side 1 (Social Street side) finding a small fire in the wall cavity. Firefighters lowered the initial hose line that was stretched to the roof to an awaiting firefighter on a step ladder. The fire was quickly contained to the area of origin.

ACW Burrillville, RI 260 Lynne Ln November 22, 2008 : BURRILLVILLE, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - A small garage fire was quickly knocked down by Burrillville firefighters at 260 Lynne Lane in the Oakland-Mapleville section on November 22, 2008. The fire was in a 2 stall garage of a 2 story wdfm occupied dwelling with a bonus room above the garage. Firefighters pulled down the ceilings in the garage area near the chimney of a fireplace finding no extension. Companies were in service a short time after the initial alarm.

3rd Alarm Woonsocket, RI 136 Carrington Ave November 22, 2008 : WOONSOCKET, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire venting out of several windows on the first floor on side 2 and 3 of this occupied multiple family dwelling. The structure at 136 Carrington Avenue housed 6 apartments on 3 floors. Police arrived first and reported the possibility of trapped occupants prompting command to strike a second and third alarms. Blackstone, MA Ladder 1 responded into the scene because of Woonsocket's Ladder 2 being city service only due to mechanical issues. The aggressive first due companies stretched in several hand lines and also searched the dwelling. Searches turned up negative as the heavy overlapping started to darken down on the first floor. The fire did extend upwards to the second and third floors through chases and voids. The moderate smoke condition started to turn to chocolate fudge color on the upper floors as the fire started to roll on the upper floors. Command then made the decision to pull out the firefighters as fire started to show from the dormers on sides 2 and 4. Woonsocket Ladder 1 opened it's ladder pipe into the heavy fire on side 2 as firefighters also played hand lines into the dwelling. Command made the decision to allow companies back into the structure as the heavy fire was knocked down. Cumberland Hill's Engine 41 responded for RIT and also their air supply unit for refilling of spent air cylinders. Interior crews chased pockets of hidden fire bringing the fire under control in another hour.  Mutual aid covered the empty city fire houses will companies mopped up.

2nd Alarm Smithfield 50 Farnum Pike November 7, 2008 : SMITHFIELD, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) – Just before midnight on November 7, 2008 an on duty Smithfield Fire Captain at Station 2 on Farnum Pike heard crackling and windows breaking while walking around his firehouse. The Captain decided to go for a walk outside his firehouse to investigate. He found a well involved 1 story wdfm dwelling just about 3 houses down from the station. The captain alerted his men and fire alarm on what he found and a 1st alarm was struck for the address of 50 Farnum Pike. The 50x50 wood dwelling was set back behind a 2sty dwelling in a rear lot. Heavy fire was ripping through this unoccupied structure on the sides 2, 3, and 4. Big lines were stretched off of Engine 2 to start fire suppression. Engine 1 arrived and laid 1000’ of 5” supply line from Farnum Pike up to the scene. Four lines were stretched off of Engine 2 to knock the heavy fire down. The roof collapsed along the entire side 3 wall. The home is a total loss due to the heavy fire damage sustained throughout. The OIC requested mutual aid from North Providence, which supplied a Task Force to the scene. Station coverage was provided by Johnston, North Smithfield, and Harmony Fire Departments.

2nd Alarm Providence, RI 38 Bridgham Street October 14, 2008 : PROVIDENCE, RI – Fire Alarm stilled out Engines 11, 14, 10 Special Hazards, Tower 1, Tower 2, and Battalion 2 to the area of Bridgham and Fales Streets. Tower Ladder 2 reported smoke showing as they responded in from quarters. As Fire Alarm keyed their console, phones could be heard ringing in the background for the address of 38 Bridgham St. Tower 2 arrived to find a 3sty wdfm dwelling with heavy overlapping fire showing on sides 1 and 2. The fire was fueled on the sidewall by old wood shake siding. Battalion 2 arrived and ordered a second alarm due to reports of an occupant trapped. As companies started primary searches, Engine 10 stretched in a hand line to attack the heavy fire. The aggressive interior attack using 5 hand lines kept the fire contained to the area of origin with fire damage to the siding from overlapping fire. Searches proved negative as companies received conflicting reports due to a language barrier. Providence EMS did transport one occupant to Rhode Island Hospital in an unknown condition.

2nd Alarm Central Falls, RI 121 Clay Street October 14, 2008. : CENTRAL FALLS, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) – Firefighters responded to 121 Clay Street around 0930hrs on October 14, 2008 for a reported building fire.  Engine 2 and Truck 1 arrived to find heavy smoke and fire showing on side 1 from a setback 2.5sty wdfm dwelling. Engine 2 firefighters stretched in a 1.75 foam hand line to the first floor to begin the fire attack. Truck 1 setup to open the roof above the fire from an adjacent parking lot. Engine 1 and Rescue 1 assisted Engine 2 with open up duties to find the hidden fire extending up the balloon framed walls into the ceiling joist. Command requested a 2nd alarm due to the minimum manning of 8 men on the first alarm. The 2nd alarm brought in the oncoming shift, Pawtucket Engine 2 and Ladder 1, Lincoln Ladder 5 (FAST), and station coverage. Station coverage was provided by Cumberland and Providence.The fire was contained to the bays around a window on side 1 with extension into the ceiling joist. Reports of handymen heating and scraping paint on the window casings started this fire. The torch ignited the wood behind the casing and vinyl siding extending upwards. The handymen tried to quell the fire on their own with a garden hose before calling 911. The Red Cross and Salvation Army Canteen unit responded in also to provide aid. There were no reported injuries.

Working Fire Smithfield, RI 567 Putnam Pike October 10, 2008 : SMITHFIELD, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - Smithfield Fire received 911 calls for a dwelling fire at 567 Putnam Pike (RTE-44) at Spring Street around 0820hrs on October 10, 2008. Fire due companies reported heavy smoke showing from a 2sty wdfm occupied dwelling. The firefighters found a cellar fire in the area of the electrical panel  on the side 1 -2 corner. They stretched in an 1.75" handline to keep the fire in check as the power company shut the power to the dwelling. Once the power was shut off the fire was quickly knocked down. The fire was contained to the area of origin with no extension to the first floor. Companies opened up the walls and farmers porch floor decking above the fire. The dwelling sustained smoke damage throughout. North Providence  and Johnston responded in for mutual aid assistance. There were no injuries reported.

Lincoln, RI car over embankment on Railroad Street October 6, 2008. : LINCOLN, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - A SUV traveling south on Railroad Street accidentally veered off of the roadway, through a fence, down  an embankment, and landed on train tracks around noon time on October 6, 2008. Station 1 and Rescue 4 responded into the scene. Deputy Chief Desmaris requested the Heavy Rescue and Gator from Station 2 to also respond on this incident in case of possible entrapment. The vehicle came to rest several feet away from the Blackstone Valley Bike Path after the 20' drop off of the roadway. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The patient was alert when the firefighters from Engine 2 arrived on scene. Engine 2 and Chief 2 placed the patient in cervical spine precautions as they waited for Rescue 4 to arrive on scene. The patient was placed in Rescue 4 for evaluation of her injuries. Initial reports have the patient suffering a possible broken leg and a diabetic emergency. The patient was transported by ground ALS to the Rhode Island Trauma Center.

Working Fire Lincoln, RI Lincoln High School Old River Rd October 3, 2008 : LINCOLN, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - Lincoln Fire Alarm stilled out Stations 2, 1, 3 and Rescue 2 along with police for a reported car that struck the high school and was fully involved with the occupant still inside. Engine 31 arrived first and reported heavy fire from the old middle school entrance on side 1. Working fire companies, Ladder 51 (FAST) and Rescue 4 responded in to assist. Bystanders told firefighters that an occupant was indeed still inside the inferno. Two 1.75" handlines were stretched in to start the attack on the fire. Engine 1 secured the 5" LDH feeder to Engine 24. A single occupant was found deceased in the vehicle after companies from Engine 24 and 31 knocked the fire down. Rescue 2 and Rescue 4 performed a primary search of adjoining corridors, classrooms, and gymnasium. Ladder 51 set up their F.A.S.T. equipment on side 1 ready to deploy at a moments notice. After The fire was contained to the area of origin with heavy smoke damage to that wing of the school. The scene is being investigated by Lincoln Police and the RI State Fire Marshal's Office. The State Medical Examiner responded remove the victim for positive identification.

Working Fire Buffalo, NY Bradley & Hawley Streets September 28, 2008 : BUFFALO, NY (ERIE COUNTY) - Fire Dispatch hit the "Alarm of fire" tone around around 0230hrs early in the morning of September 28, 2008 for the corners of Bradley & Hawley Streets for a reported structural fire in a vacant dwelling. Engine 19 was first due reporting a vacant 2sty wdfm dwelling with fire showing from the second floor of side 2. They lead off with an 1.75" handline to find the seat of the fire. The heavy fire was contained to the second floor and attic area. An aggressive interior attack using 2 handlines quickly knocked this fire down. Fire once again peeked out from the side 2 and 4 gables as Truck 13 opened the roof. The fire was brought under control in roughly 30 minutes of arrival of companies.

All Hands Fire Buffalo, NY 175 North Street September 27, 2008. : BUFFALO, NY (ERIE COUNTY) - An Alarm of Fire was struck for the address of 175 North Street on Saturday morning of September 27, 2008. The building is an occupied 9sty brick/wood apartment complex that was sprinklered. Engine 2 was first due to the scene and reported they would be stretching on a rubbish fire on the third floor in an apartment. The fire was contained to the closet of origin with out extension. Companies used squeegees to try to clean up some of the water damage to the apartment and hallways.

Buffalo, NY Fire Boat Edward M. Cotter - Engine 20 : After touring the Buffalo Fire Museum, we headed to the end of Michigan Street to see Engine 20 which is the Buffalo Fire Boat Edward M Cotter. We were welcomed on board by a retired brother firefighter who is one of the retired jakes that staff the boat. The City wants to close this company but the brothers wont let it happen. They staff the boat on their own time to keep the company alive. This vessels 4 pumps 15,000gpm. Water can be applied via 5 deck turrets, one of which can elevate 22' above the deck and also has 6 hose connections on each side of the boat.

2nd Alarm Equivalent South Lockport, NY 5925 South Transit Road September 26, 2008 : SOUTH LOCKPORT, NY (NIAGARA COUNTY) - A kitchen fire rapidy spread through the roof of this one story occupied family restaurant on Friday, September 26, 2008. The fire occured at Alexander's Family Restaurant around 12:30hrs during a lunch serving. Firefighters from the Town of Lockport, Royalton, and the City of Lockport responded to the scene. A the height of the fire flames shot through the roof out of control. We were traveling on the NY State Thruway some 2hrs out from the scene as this job started....this is what we saw as we arrived into the area.

ACW Uxbridge, MA 30 Marywood Street September 20, 2008 : UXBRIDGE, MA (WORCESTER COUNTY) - Fire dispatch received calls for a garage fire attached to a "Cape Cod" style dwelling just before 1300hrs on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 30 Marywood Street. First due units arrived to find smoke showing from an occupied dwelling and all of the occupants safely outside. Two lines were stretched in to knock the fire down in the garage area. Two 5" lines were laid into the scene from 2 separate hydrants for water supply if the fire grew out of hand. The incident commander used 3 engines to handle this fire and placed the fire under control in roughly 30 minutes.

MVA Burrillville, RI Rte-102 @ the Middle School September 15, 2008 : BURRILLVILLE, RI – A Burrillville Police officer noticed brake lights from the ditch off to the side of the road while on routine patrol on Rte-102 near the middle school early in the morning of September 15, 2008. The officer radioed for fire/rescue units to respond while he checked for injuries. The officer found four victims, 1 walking wounded, 2 minor to serious injuries in the rear seat not trapped, and a serious injury trapped in the front passenger seat. Stations 3, 1, 2 were dispatched to the scene. Medic 3 arrived first and reported a car into a ditch against a tree with 1 patient trapped in the passenger seat. The OIC had companies set up the “Jaws of Life” to work on freeing the trapped front passenger. Medic 3 packaged the most serious patient that wasn’t trapped and transported them to Rhode Island Hospital and Medic 1 transported the other non trapped patient. The firefighters freed the trapped front passenger in about 10 minutes. The patient was packaged and also transported to Rhode Island Trauma Center for evaluation of injuries. 2nd Alm Providence, RI 670 North Main Street,Charlesgate North Apts, September 11, 2008 : PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence Fire Alarm Office received Box 2824 around 1045hrs on September 11, 2008 for the address of 670 North Main Street. This 13 story occupied apartment complex known as Charlesgate North Apartments is home for elderly and lower income residents. The building has seen its fair share of apartment fire in the past. Engine 7 arrived to find smoke showing from the 7th floor on the North Main Street side which was designated side “1”. The 3rd Battalion Chief ordered a second alarm once the working fire was confirmed due to SOP’s for a high rise fire. Ladder 4, using a reserve Mack Backer (Ladder 2), set up on the side 1-4 corner raising its boom up to the fire floor. Engine 4 pumped into the standpipe system as Engine 7 made the fire floor. The Jakes found fire in the kitchen area in one apartment. As Engine 7 knocked the fire down companies went to the apartment above to check for vertical extension, which was negative. The fire was knocked down quickly once lines were placed into action. Second alam companies helped with evacuation and stood fast for orders. EMS transported one victim to a local hospital with a report of smoke inhalation. The fire was placed under control in about a half hour.

Fatal 3rd Alarm Worcester, MA 856 Main Street September 13, 2008 : This building was vacant for years. It is a 30x70 or so 2.5sty wdfm victorian style dwelling. First due units found heavy fire venting out the #2 and #3 floors on arrival. Water issues, heavy fire, and a report of a squatter inside called for a quick second alarm. The victim was found on floor 2 in the C/D corner unresponsive. Towers went to work with their heavy appliances once the water supply was established. Companies went back inside to mop up the hidden fire. The fire was stilled out at 0105hrs and placed under control around 0230ish or so in the am.

2nd Alarm New Bedford, MA 330 North Front Street September 10, 2008 : NEW BEDFORD, MA – First alarm companies arrived at 330 North Front Street to find heavy smoke showing from a 30x60 3sty wdfm dwelling around 1045hrs on September 10, 2008. Engine 8 found heavy fire taking possession of the third floor rapidly extending into the attic. Handlines were stretched into the well involved floor as the OIC had a report of possible occupants inside. Companies began an aggressive search which proved to be negative.  Heavy fire had overtaken the upper floor forcing command to have companies back out for a defensive attack. Ladder 1 reported heavy fire venting out of the “C” side gable end of the dwelling as companies went defensive. The bulk of the heavy fire was knocked down allowing companies to return inside to extinguish the hidden fire. Interior crews reported weaken floor joist on the 2nd and 3rd floors while they were overhauling. Command ordered Ladders 1 and 4 to position their sticks on the “B” side to open up the side wall to find the hidden fire extending upwards.The fire peeked out again as the truckies opened the side wall with chain saws and axes. A 1 ¾” handline was pulled up Ladder 1’s stick to finish the fire off.  Unconfirmed reports were that this building had a fire in it some years ago. Remodeling was done with light weight construction and trusses. The fire was under control in about an hour and a half using a 2nd alarm equivalent assignment.

Fall victim Uxbridge, MA September 8, 2008 : UXBRIDGE, MA - A male worker fell approximately 20' from the roof of the McDonald's Restaurant on Quaker Highway on September 8, 2008 around 9 o'clock in the morning. Uxbridge Fire/Rescue responded to find an adult male with multi system trauma injuries. The firefighters stabilized the patient with c-spine precautions, requested ALS, and also asked for a helicopter to transport to a trauma center. Engine 1 secured the landing zone which was set up at the DPW on River Ave. Rescue 1 stabilized the patient at the scene and then transported the patient to the landing zone where the Boston Medflight crew awaited their arrival.

2nd Alarm Equiv Gloucester, RI 8 James Street August 26, 2008 : All Gloucester Fire Companies along with a Smithfield engine responded to the area of James Street for a reported barn fire early in the morning of August 26, 2008. The chief arrived to find a 30x40 2sty wdfm barn well involved and reported a "Code Red". The structure collapsed quickly due to the heavy fire that was free burning for some time. Several lines operated to wet down the remains of the barn and to stop the slow spreading grass fire. A tanker shuttle operation was used to bring water into the scene due to the lack of hydrants in the area. Mutual aid responded in to cover the Gloucester fire houses from Scituate, Burrillville, and nearby Connecticut fire departments.

Fatal Working Fire Lincoln RI 6 Lakeview Ave August 25, 2008. : LINCOLN, RI -  Firefighters from Stations 3,4,5, and Rescue 4 responded to 6 Lakeview Ave for a reported dwelling fire with people trapped around 0900hrs on August 25, 2008. First due companies called off with smoke and fire showing from a raised ranch style dwelling. Several lines were stretched in to knock the fire down. Ladder 51 made the roof and vented to help the brothers inside find the seat of the fire.
Engine 4 found a victim on the upper level and removed him to the outside where he was pronounced deceased. The other occupant, the spouse of the victim, made it outside safely. The scene was turned over to the Lincoln Police and the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal for cause and origin.

2nd Alarm Uxbridge, MA Ironstone Rd August 23, 2008 : UXBRIDGE, MA (WORCESTER CNTY)- An Uxbridge police cruiser out on routine patrol stumbled upon this vacant "L" shaped 2.5sty wdfm farm house on Ironstone Road around 0330hrs. The fire was blowing through the roof of the main section as firefighters arrived.

The OIC requested a second alarm tanker task force due to the lack of hydrants in that area. Engines 2, 3, and Ladder 1 set up in front of the dwelling to start the attack. Engine 1 laid their bed of LDH from Engine 2 up to Quaker Highway to place dump ponds for water supply. Tankers used the Ironstone Reservoir for the fill site on Elmwood Street.

Several 2.5" lines started to knock down the heavy fire from the second floor and roof from the overgrown lot the dwelling sat on. Ladder 1 was able to flow it's ladder pipe once the water supply was sufficient. 

The bulk of the heavy fire was knocked down in about an hour and placed under control around 0600hrs. No injuries were reported.

4th Alarm Central Falls, RI 53-55 Hendricks Street August 19, 2008. : CENTRAL FALLS, RI- Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire in the basement of a vacant 3.5sty wdfm at 53-55 Hendricks Street around 2200hrs on August 19, 2008. First due units attempted an aggressive interior attack but had to withdraw due to rapid fire spread. The fire advanced throughout this balloon framed house soon after arrival. Heavy fire showed itself on side 2's cellar, first and second floor windows extending upwards into the loft. The fire self vented out of the attic making the OIC sound the "ALL OUT". Two ladder pipes and several lines brought this blaze under control in 2 hours. Mutual Aid responded in from Lincoln, Pawtucket, North Providence, Cumberland, and Providence.

MVA w/ Entrapment North Smithfield, RI St. Paul Street August 8, 2008 : North Smithfield, RI- A sole female occupant tipped her car over on a rain slickened Saint Paul Street around 2000hrs on August 8, 2008. Rescue 1 arrived first due to the MVA was a 1/4 mile from their firehouse. Captain Malboeuf radioed that he had a female who was alert and oriented trapped in the driver's seat. Engine 2 arrived to set up stabilizing jacks to secure the vehicle. Engine 2 Lieutenant Dave Mowry used the cutters to remove the roof to free the victim. The driver was placed on a backboard and transfered to Rescue 1 once the roof was flapped down. The patient was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for evaluation of injuries.

W/F Woonsocket, RI 356 Avenue "A" August 5, 2008 : Woonsocket, RI (Providence)-On August 5, 2008 around 1800hrs the Woonsocket, RI Fire Department responded to 356 Avenue A for a reported structure fire. Engines 1, 6, 3, Ladder 2, Rescue 2 and the Chief arrived to find heavy smoke showing from this 1sty wdfm barber shop. Reports of a basement fire proved true as companies made their way down through the bulkhead door on side 3. The fire had extended up a few bays on side 3 creating heavy smoke in the attic area. Truckies opened the roof in the rear to wet down the upwards spread of the fire. The fire damage was contained to the basement and side 3 walls along with smoke, water, and overhaul damage to the rest of the building. 

This building is owned by my barber...hurry up and rebuild Joe...the hair that still grows will have to cut soon!!!!

General Alarm Gardner, MA Mill & Winter Streets July 26, 2008 : Gardner, MA fire companies arrived to find this "New England" style mill complex well involved around 3am on July 26, 2008 at the corners of Mill and Winter Streets. This vacant 3sty mill complex had several interconnecting building via catwalks. The fire did extend to an exposure building through a catwalk. The fire was held to the building of origin and to the exposure on side 4. Several big lines and tower ladders bought this fire under control in 2 hours.

ACW Lincoln, RI 1032 Smithfield Ave July 5, 2008 : Lincoln Fire dispatched Stations 5, 4, 3 and Rescue 4 to 1032 Smithfield Ave for smoke detectors sounding with the home owner also smelling smoke. Deputy Chief 5 reported all occupants were reported out of the dwelling and for a line to be stretched. An 1 3/4" foam line was stretched to the side 3-4 corner to knock down the fire in the partitions. Companies used a chainsaw to open up the siding to check for extention. The State Fire Marshal's office will be assisting in cause determination.

MVA w/ Entrapment Burrillville, RI 2500blk of Victory HWY June 11, 2008 : The driver of this single vehicle mva was pinned for 40 minutes after crossing the lane of travel and hitting a large tree. Nasonville and Oakland-Mapleville used the cutters, spreaders, and a sawzall to free the drivers legs which was pinned by the "A" post, steering wheel, and the firewall.  The driver was reported to be conscious and alert throughout the extrication. The OIC reqquested Lifeflight due to the extended extrication. The Lifeflight crew arrived at the scene to help stabilize the driver before departure to the landing zone at the Burrillville Middle School.

Working Fire North Attleborough, MA 835 Mt. Hope Street June 5, 2008 : North Attleborough fire arrived to find heavy smoke showing from this 2sty townhouse around 1700hrs on June 5, 2008. First due units stretched in an 1.75" attack line up to the second floor of Unit 20. They encountered smoke and fire in the knee wall and slopes of the ceiling as they made the second floor. The fire was quickly knocked down by the single line. Ladder 1 vented the roof as other NAFD, Plainville, and North Cumberland, RI jakes opened up and performed salvage. Initial reports state soldiering of an air conditioner unit as the cause.

Working Fire North Smithfield, RI Rustic Drive-In Rte-146 South June 4, 2008 : North Smithfield, RI Firefighters responded to the Rustic Drive In on Rte-146 Suthbound around noon on June 4, 2008. Police arrived to find heavy smoke showing from the concession stand building. Lincoln Engine 1 responded in on the line box and also arrived first on scene. Lt. Mike Gleason reported heavy smoke and fire showing from a "mushroom" vent on the roof. Lincoln Engine 1 set up on side 2 and stretched in a 1.75 attack line. North Smithfield Engine 2, Tanker 1, and the chiefs arrived a few minutes later. NSFD Engine 2 stretched a back up line to the "reel room" on the roof area. The fire was knocked down in the kitchen area and then companies opened up the vent system to knock that fire down. Nasonville Tanker 33 was requested to the scene to back up NSFD Tanker 1 due to the lack of hydrants in the area. The fire was placed under control 45 minutes after the intial alarm. The NSFD Fire Marshal along with the State Fire Marshal will be investigating the cause and origin.

3rd Alarm Worcester, MA 11 Goulding St May 22, 2008 : First due companies found heavy fire venting from the #1 floor on sides 2 and 3 of this 3sty wdfm occupied dwelling. Heavy fire was overlapping on side 2 and up the rear stair well blocking the exit from the upper floors. A second alarm was requested due to the life hazard and fire conditions. Reports of 5 rescues were made with the possibility of a few jumpers from floor 2. Interior crews chased fire from floor 1 into the attic before the all out was given. A third alarm was requested for manpower for overhaul and salvage.

3rd Alarm Woonsocket, RI Pond & East School May 18, 2008 : Woonsocket Fire Department responded to the area of Pond and East School Streets for a reported dwelling fire around 11:00am on May 18, 2008.

Engine 3 arrived to find heavy fire extending rapidly on side 3 of a 4sty wdfm occupied dwelling that was vinyl sided. The fire had jumped into the windows and started to extend inwards. 

Handlines were stretched to side 3 and inside to the upper floors that were lighting up. An aggressive interior attack was attempted for 20 minutes before the OIC pulled out crews due to the rapidly deteriorating conditions.

The fire took control of the upper floor and attic in minutes after the last company was pulled out. Big lines, deck guns, and ladder pipes opened up to drown the heavy fire. 

Companies stayed on scene for hours to hit hot spots. No cause has been determined as of yet. The building was a total loss with emergency demolition slated for the next day.

Quick Knockdown in Worcester, MA April 5, 2008 : Worcester Engine 16 arrived to find heavy smoke showing form a 1.5sty wdfm single family dwelling at 150 Belmont Street just after midnight on April 05, 2008. First due companies led off with an 1.75 attack line through the front door to knock the room and contents fire down rather quickly. Ladder 2 raised their stick to the roof with ease but held off from venting due to aggressive hose line work. A female occupant was treated for burns and smoke inhalation by UMass EMS and transported to a local er.

Working Fire Woonsocket RI 119 Chester Street April 3, 2008 : Woonsocket firefighters quickly knocked this fire down in this 3sty wdfm 6 family dwelling at 119 Chester Street just before midnight on April 3, 2008. Engine 3 stretched up to the #3flr left side apartment with an 1.75" hand line and quickly knocked the fire down. Fire did drop down to the apartment below which was also quickly stopped by Ladder 2 and Engine 4. 

A huge THANK YOU goes out to Fire Chief Ken Finlay and Deputy Chief Williams for their efforts to get me into the scene to try to shoot the brothers in action.....Even though you both waved me in across the lines...the COPS prevailed in their wonderful bulldogness...enough said before I lose my cool again...

2nd Alarm Somerset, MA 833 Grand Army Highway (Rte-6) Burger King : Somerset Engine 6 reported on scene with flames from the roof of this 1sty Burger King Restaurant in Somerset, MA around 1400hrs on April 2, 2008. The Jakes stretched in a 1.75" handline to find the seat of the fire. The fire was reportedly in the fry-a-lator system with extension into the ductwork system. The fire was quickly knocked down using two 1.75" hand lines. The brothers opened the roof around the vent/fan using a chainsaw to check for extension outside of the duct system. The fire was under control in 20 minutes using 3 engines, a ems rescue, and several chiefs. The Board of Health was notified along with the fire investigation units.

3rd Alarm Milford, MA 114 Main Street March 26, 2008 : Milford, MA- The Milford Fire Alarm Office received calls for a reported building fire just after midnight on March 26, 2008. First due units found heavy smoke showing from side 1 of a 3sty 40x60 taxpayer style structure. Companies found heavy fire extending upwards on the rear porches as they stretched in. The heavy fire ripped through the porches and entered the structure on all floors. An aggressive attack kept the fire contained to the rear rooms on all floors. The fire was placed under control after a 2hr battle in spring time snow flurries.

2nd Alarm North Providence, RI 955 Mineral Spring Ave March 02, 2008 : North Providence firefighters were confronted with heavy fire in a 40x60 3sty wdfm at 955 Mineral Spring Ave. Engine 4 reported heavy fire venting out the 3-4 corner window on the #2flr. Several lines were stretched in to knock down the extending fire. All of the NPFD apparatus along with mutual aid from Providence, Pawtucket and Johnston were on scene. Working Fire North Smithfield, RI 492 Douglas Pike February 12, 2008 : North Smithfield Firefighters received a call for a possible dwelling fire at 492 Douglas Pike around 0900hrs on February 12, 2008. Car 1 arrived to find heavy smoke pushing from a 1.5sty 20x40 WDFM cape cod style dwelling. All occupants were out safely on arrival of first due companies. Engine 2 stretched in through the front door to start an aggressive interior attack. The bulk of the heavy fire on the #1 floor was knocked down with 2 hand lines. The fire made it's way into the #2flr and attic space. Woonsocket Ladder 1 made a great text book vent hole on side 1 and a second on side 3. Once the vent holes were established the fire made it's way out of the hole to take the heat off of the interior crews. The fire was totally knocked down about 10 minutes after the perfect vent work. Firefighters from Woonsocket, Nasonville, Oakland/Mapleville, Smithfield, Millville, Lincoln, Blackstone assisted North Smithfield by covering or working this fire.

Working Fire Bellingham, MA 370 Pulaski Blvd February 01, 2008 : As Bellingham companies mopped up at the 3rd Alarm on California Ave, a DPW worker called in heavy smoke in the area of the 400 block of Pulaski Blvd. Out of town fire companies covering the Bellingham stations responded to the area to find a vacant 2sty rectory with heavy fire pushing from a side 4 window. Companies stretched in and knocked down the fire keeping it to the region of origin. Fire departments from Woonsocket, Blackstone, Medway, Wrentham, Milford worked this fire while Bellingham wrapped up the 3rd Alarm.

3rd Alarm Bellingham, MA 40 California Ave February 01, 2008 : Bellingham Police Sergeant Ed Guzowski was on normal patrol when he noticed heavy smoke in the area. He found heavy smoke pushing from 40 California Ave, a 2.5sty wdfm. He attempted to gain entry to search but the heavy smoke forced him out. Companies arrived to find heavy fire on the first floor. They stretched in through the front door to attack the fire. An unconfirmed report of a trapped occupant forced companies to start an aggressive search . The search was negative due to no one being home at the time of the fire. The fire traveled up the balloon framed walls into the attic area. Crews tried valiantly to open up the upper floors walls to stop the upwards spread of the fire. The fire made it's way into the knee walls and attic space breaking through the vent holes. The OIC had companies exit the building to switch to a defensive attack. Woonsocket and Blackstone ladders went to work with their pipes along with several other hand lines. The fire burned through the entire roof before comapnies gained the upper hand on this job. Bellingham was assisted by Woonsocket, Blackstone, Franklin, Milford, Wrentham fire departments.

2nd Alarm Providence, RI 18 Joslin St January 24, 2008 : I was planning on going to buff Providence the day this fire happened. I had to take care of a few last minute errands before we headed that way. This fire broke out some 6 streets from the parking lot we hang out at. Just my luck!!! I guess Dave isn't the white cloud that we thought... 
Engine 15 stretched in and made an outstanding stop on this 3sty wdfm dwelling. Here are a few shots of the guys packing up.

Working Fire Uxbridge, MA 350 North Main Street January 24, 2008 : Uxbridge Fire Department responded to 350 North Main Street for a reported well involved building around 3am on January 24, 2008. The OIC arrived to find smoke pushing from a 20x30 1.5sty wdfm vacant dwelling. The first due engine stretched in a 1.75" hand line through the front door to knock down the contents on fire. A second line was laid in dry to the bravo side doorway for back up. Ladder 1 made themselves ready to vent the roof if needed. The fire was under control in roughly a half an hour. Three engines, 1 ladder, and the engine/rescue worked this fire along with Northbridge providing station coverage.

3rd Alarm Worcester, MA 43-47 Lancaster St January 23, 2008 : Worcester, MA Firefighters faced heavy fire conditions on arrival from a vacant 2.5sty wdfm dwelling around 0250hrs on January 23, 2008. Quick second and third alarms were transmitted due to the severe exposure issue on the Delta side. The OIC had companies place big lines, deck guns, and ladder pipes on the exposure to try to stop the rapidly spreading fire. The heavy fire made its way into the 3rd floor and attic of the exposure while firefighters were inside with big lines. Companies were pulled out due to the large amount of fire that burned through the roof. Firefighters went back in to chase hot spots and open up after the ladder pipes and tower ladders knocked the attic fire down.

7th Alarm + Lawrence, MA Parker & Market Sts January 21, 2008 : I went to the Patriots game the night before this fire, I watched them become AFC Champs, had a few beverages too many and crashed once I got home. My good friend tried to wake me several times during this fire... he did not succeed until 0530hrs....some 3hr into this spectacular fire. I arrived around 0630 and saw only these photos. GO PATRIOTS....GOOD LUCK IN ARIZONA!!

2nd Alarm Worcester, MA 39 Bellevue Street January 15, 2008 : Worcester Engine 2 arrived to find heavy fire venting out side 1 and 4. They streched in with big lines to knock down the overlapping fire. Lines were streched inside as more companies arrived. The heavy fire damage was contained to the first floor with some extension to the #2flr room above the fire floor. A thank you goes out to the off duty Worcester Rescue 1 Jake who took me into the fire scene due to the bulldog police officer positioned at Chandler and Bellevue.

Working Fire Plus North Providence, RI January 12, 2008 : North Providence companies arrived to find heavy fire venting out of the second floor of this 2sty wdfm dwelling. The Brothers made an aggressive interior attack qwelling the beast in less than 20 minutes. Special calls brought in apparatus from Providence and Johnston.

3rd Alarm Woonsocket, RI 65 Aylsworth Ave January 06, 2008 : Woonsocket Firefighters quickly knocked this 3rd Alarm down in about in hour. Companies had hidden fire in the ceilings and walls on the 1st and 2nd floors. Heavy smoke and water damage was sustained throughout this 3sty wdfm balloon framed dwelling.
